Howdy folks, here’s another round up of picture book goodness I’ve come across in the past 30 days or so.
As always, clicking the images below will open them up in Instagram, where you can see a selection of pages & more images. Because I love ya.
TEN LITTLE RABBITS is a posthumous release from the Maurice Sendak Foundation — originally done around 1970. The drawings are loose and sketchy, and may have been better duplicated at a smaller size like a board book or Nutshell Library pocket size. Nevertheless, his posing and expressions are as delightful as always, and it’s a great simple counting book for any toddlers in your life.
HOPE IS THE THING WITH FEATHERS is an illustrated adaptation by Tim Hopgood of an Emily Dickinson poem. This is one of those books I’d put into the category of ones about life, the universe and everything and what it may be like under the veil.
THE YOUNG TEACHER AND THE GREAT SERPENT by Irene Vasco and Juan Palomino — I truly love this story and the colorful artwork therein. It’s a poetic, thought-provoking exploration of how stories can protect and guide a community, the importance of indigenous knowledge, and what it means to be a lifelong learner.
POETREE by Shauna LaVoy Reynolds and Shahrzad Maydani — my friend Laure told me I needed to read this, and she was right. It’s pretty fantastic and beautifully illustrated, about the value of friendship, poetry, and a subtle nod to the spirit of Shel Silverstein. (I mean, it has as a girl named Sylvia and a dog named Shel. And a tree.)
…and finally there’s THE LAST ZOOKEEPER by Aaron Becker, creator of wordless treasures of picture book wonderfulness. This one is a masterpiece and a true work of art.
Okay, that’s all for now kids. See ya around.
