Picture Books from May + June 2024
My (sort-of) monthly digest of children's picture book discoveries.
Sorry friends, I skipped a month because things.
Here are some gems I enjoyed these past couple of moon phases.
As always, clicking the images below will open them up in Instagram, where you can see a selection of pages & more images.
THE CAT WHO COULDN’T BE BOTHERED by Jack Kurland. Friends, if you need a belly laugh and a reminder there’s some good in this world worth fighting for, read this book.
WALKING TREES by Marie-Louise Gay. A wonderful treasure of a picture book about a girl named Lily, her pet tree George, and the influence they have on their home city.
YOU STOLE MY NAME TOO by Dennis McGregor. I don’t often give shout-outs to “cute” books but this one is at least clever — and I was won over by the Hedgehog Cactus.
THE PELICAN CAN! by Toni Yuly. This remarkable book is a beautiful work of art — simple and quaint with dynamic text and silhouettes with brush line artwork. Poetic and lovely — great for little ones in your life, and for bird lovers.
TOO MANY GOLEMS by Jane Yolen and Maya Shleifer. Puts a hilarious modern spin on ancient Jewish folklore, when a Rabbi’s naughty son summons monsters while practicing his Hebrew. So good.
IF YOU RUN OUT OF WORDS by Felicita Sata. One of the best picture books I’ve discovered this year. Gorgeous, vibrant, Christ-haunted. You need this in your life. Especially if you’re a parent.
In other news, I was invited as a featured author on this Substack newsletter by Michelle Watson — a visual interview about me and the books I love. Check it out and enjoy!
