What I'm Listening To: Peaceful Love and Ghosts
New sounds from Bon Iver and Ghost give darkness and delight.
Hello friends, are any of you in love with the new BON IVER album?
I sure am — and because I’ve listened to the whole thing dozens of times already, I can’t really pinpoint why I love it. Like many of his albums, the tracks sort-of mesh together into one piece within itself and the whole experience of listening to them straight through is the way to go. There’s an upbeat gospel quality to the songs this time around, with less melancholy and less experimental soundscapes, just straight-forward good songs. The track Short Story that kicks off the fable portion of the record is a particular transcendent highlight —- as is the track he does with Danielle Haim. But the whole thing is fantastic, really.
I also truly adore this interview Justin Vernon does with Zane Lowe at Apple Music — they talk about mental health, Tolkien, and being in service of music. So worth your time to watch or listen to.
On the other side of the musical spectrum, from resonant sparks of light and hope to whimsical spookiness, I am obsessed with this new track by Swedish shock-rockers GHOST and look forward to diving deeper into their new album dropping this weekend. There’s a great ‘80s haunted-house vibe to the video and its amazing visuals, and the song is so much naughty fun.
