What I'm Listening To: Vikings, Thieves, and Christ-Haunted Canadian Prophets
'The Northman' soundtrack is winning me over with its ferocious beauty.
I can’t stop listening to the original motion picture soundtrack for Robert Eggers’ Viking saga The Northman. I loved the film itself, especially as it pummeled my senses on a giant theatre screen, but the soundtrack in particular stood out to me. Its sonic nuances reminded me at times of how the soundtrack for The Green Knight (another favorite film and score, together and apart) resonates with an ethereal and authentic atmosphere. The Northman, of course, is much darker and more visceral, but equally as powerful.
Other newly-acquired sounds that are tickling my earbuds with delight these days are Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You, the new album by Big Thief, who I’ve just recently discovered — and of course WE from Arcade Fire, which was greatly anticipated and has not disappointed. Overall I like the fact that it mixes their Everything Now-ish synth-pop sound with the concept-album feeling of Funeral and Suburbs -- and I'm geeking out over Peter Gabriel's guest appearance.
Both albums are in heavy rotation right now, and bringing me some much needed healing and joy.
What are you listening to repeatedly these days? What is bringing you joy?
